Artist’s mid-century kitchen

Warm wood built-ins around the refrigerator, with an open bookshelf and a stone-topped nook, seen past a copper pendant over the pale stone island

The homeowner is a painter, and she wanted to revive the soul of her mid-century home in the hills outside Pittsburgh with a kitchen that blends mid-century and contemporary.

As an artist, she has a deep understanding of color, and she was closely involved in every decision. It was a wonderful collaboration, and I learned a lot from her.

The cabinetry takes its cue from classic Broyhill mid-century wood, set against earthy slate floors. We mixed inset bases with overlay cabinets so the kitchen feels like it evolved over time, and the custom doors are much thicker than standard, which made keeping every reveal equal a real technical challenge.

There are hundreds of small decisions here you might never notice. The stone ledge has a recessed channel for an LED strip, angled back so the light is never in your eyes, and it carries seamlessly under the cabinets. Details like that are the reason you look at it and think, “Why do I like this so much?”
